As an Indonesian I was proud when N250 flew
in 1996. World crisis that influenced Indonesia economy in 1998 made
this project was canceled. This situation was deplorable. Mr. Habibie,
former President of Indonesia, was the man behind the success story of
N250 development. N250 is twin turboprop engine that designed to fly in
short haul. Now, we can see many planes like ATR 72-500/600 that has
been used by some Indonesia Airlines. If N250 would be designed with new
specification might compete ATR 72-500/600 or Bombardier Dash.
Indonesia has large archipelago. Airplane is
the worthiest transport to connect from one island to the others. The
market of turboprop airplanes in Indonesia is big enough for the next
one or two decades. IPTN (Indonesia Airspace Industry) has also planned
to develop new small turboprop airplane that called N-219. This plane is
proposed to fly in 2014. I pray and hope that Indonesia Aerospace will
be one of important aerospace industry in the world. I assume that IPTN
is large as Bombardier or Embraer now if there was no economic crisis in
1998.
