World Class Doctor

Did you ever hear this words “world class doctor”? I suggest that you ever hear but rarely. Doctor is profession that sometimes needs a local wisdom, not only science. Being a doctor in Indonesia is different with a doctor in US maybe. Indonesia is tropical country that means a lot of disease that called infectious disease. In US maybe you’ll rarely find infectious disease. US as developed country, I estimated that degenerative disease or maybe metabolic disease is more obvious. Indonesia as developing country which economy is still a problem for allocating enough funds in health sector.

Nevertheless, I know that world class doctor won’t be appreciated only from the knowledge. World class doctor is doctor that can combine medical science empirically, have a good foresight, good attitude and also can cure not only the disease but also help to prevent, promote the disease. In future, prevention and promotion in health care is the most appropriate methods to solve health problem.

How to be a world class doctor? According to my opinion, world class doctor must have good communication to the patient, another doctor and also to any profession that have close relationship with health sector. The basic of communication is language. So, doctor must know what language in his working area is. Doctor worked in East Java better to know Javanese or Madura Language. Doctor worked in West Java better to know Sundanese Language. So, Indonesian doctor must be known at least two languages, local language and also national language “Bahasa Indonesia”. In globalization era, doctor must have good capability to communicate with world language at least English.

Be sides as physician, doctor must have another skill that can support his career. Public speaking and writing can improve doctor knowledge. Why I said that public speaking and writing can improve doctor knowledge? This is the reason, “Before you start to speak and write, you must have an idea or substances in your head.” The smart writers must have a good knowledge; they will read a lot of books, magazines and journals. This situation makes doctor’s knowledge will improve soon.

This writing could be done when I worked at medical clinic at afternoon. I wrote when there was no patient here. So, for all physicians, try to make dream as world class doctor, use your time effectively.
